Finding Real Treasure

Treasure map for an impromptu winter hike

We’ve been having so many winter adventures since we decided to embrace the idea of “friluftsliv” and challenge ourselves to get outside for family outdoor activities at least once a week, no matter the weather (we’re more up to date with sharing on Instagram if you want to see a more steady stream of ideas).

What started as a way to help us get through winter and the ache of not being able to visit loved ones has turned into a new mindset, new traditions, and new connections. One adventure that encapsulated this best was a surprise, impromptu treasure hunt that our neighbors created for us as well as other friends. It’s a beautiful idea and we can’t wait to pay it forward.

Setting out on the treasure hunt

The treasure hunt adventure started with a text message and map. Our neighbor sent us clues in the form of a poem and told us where to start, “Off by foot, left the field of wheat, Into tall pines, you’ll follow your feet…”

What could it be?

We followed the clues and ultimately found the treasure of a sweet little treat as well as a message to “take what you will and leave the rest for more.”

“Your move…”

The treasure hunt hike only took about an hour and we were able to head out right after virtual school ended and finish it before sunset. It was a great midweek adventure and wonderful reminder of how friendships can grow even when we can’t be together. We’re going to create a treasure hunt and share it later this winter so more families can have some fun and adventure on a random weekday, too.
